NORTH WORKSは16年目を迎えます。

 

15年間支えてくださったお客様、お取引先の皆様、仲間、家族、そして関わってくださったすべての方へ、心から感謝申し上げます。

 

 

 

実はこれまで、一つだけうまく答えられなかった質問がありました。

 

「NORTH WORKSという名前には、どんな意味があるのですか？」

 

英語には

 

“Find your true north.”

 

という言葉があります。

 

“True North”とは、単なる方角ではなく、自分を導く軸や人生の指針を意味する表現です。

 

正直に言うと、私は長い間、「NORTH」という名前を自分の言葉で説明することができませんでした。

 

この名前は、自分で考えたものではなかったからです。

 

 

 

 

 

20歳の頃、私は横浜にあった North Cafe & Craft という場所に出会いました。

 

そこで故・橋本さんや仲間たちと出会い、ものづくりや、その場所に流れる空気に強く惹かれました。

 

その場所の背景には Northland というコミュニティがありました。

 

自然と向き合い、手仕事を暮らしの中で実践し、その価値を大切に受け継いできた人たちです。

 

私がものづくりを通して大切にしたいと考えることの多くは、そこで出会った人たちとの時間の中で育まれたものでした。

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

約15年前、恩師の死をきっかけに独立するとき、仲間とともに「NORTH」という名前を受け継ぎました。

 

当時は悩みました。

 

「橋本さんたちが築いてきたNORTHを、自分たちが名乗っていいのだろうか。」

 

だから「NORTHとは何ですか？」と聞かれるたびに、うまく答えることができませんでした。

 

 

 

 

15年間ものづくりを続けてきた今、ようやく一つの答えにたどり着いた気がしています。

 

私にとってのNORTHとは、単なる方角ではありません。

 

歴史を敬い、

 

文化を受け継ぎ、

 

手仕事を信じること。

 

それが、私の進むべき方向でした。

 

振り返れば、世界を旅してきた素材ばかりに惹かれてきました。

 

その理由も、すべてこの「NORTH」に導かれていたのかもしれません。

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

私たちは、素材に宿る歴史や文化、そして人との出会いをつなぎ、その価値を次の世代へ手渡していきたいと思っています。

 

古いものは役目を終えるのではなく、新しい物語をまといながら次の時代へ受け継がれていく。

 

その静かな循環を、これからもものづくりを通して紡いでいきたいと思います。

About NORTH

Today, NORTH WORKS begins its sixteenth year.

 

To everyone who has supported us over the past fifteen years—our customers, retail partners, friends, family, and everyone who has been part of this journey—thank you from the bottom of my heart.

 

For many years, there was one question I could never answer.

 

“What does the name NORTH WORKS mean?”

 

There is a phrase in English:

 

“Find your true north.”

 

True north is more than a direction.

 

It is the inner compass that guides your life.

 

To be honest, for many years I couldn’t explain what “NORTH” meant—not even in my own words.

 

Because it wasn’t a name I created.

 

When I was twenty years old, I discovered a place in Yokohama called North Cafe & Craft.

 

There I met the late Mr. Hashimoto and many remarkable people whose passion for craftsmanship and way of life left a lasting impression on me.

 

Behind that place was a community called Northland.

 

It was a community that respected nature, embraced craftsmanship as part of everyday life, and quietly passed those values from one generation to the next.

 

Many of the values that still guide my work today were shaped through the people I met there.

 

About fifteen years ago, after my mentor passed away, my friends and I inherited the name NORTH as we started our own journey.

 

At the time, I often asked myself,

 

“Have we really earned the right to carry this name?”

 

That is why, whenever someone asked me what “NORTH” meant, I could never answer with confidence.

 

After fifteen years of making things, I finally feel I have found my own answer.

 

To me, NORTH is not a direction.

 

It is about respecting history.

 

Preserving culture.

 

Believing in craftsmanship.

 

Looking back, I realize I have always been drawn to materials that have traveled through time and across cultures.

 

Perhaps that, too, was my own true north.

 

At NORTH WORKS, we hope to connect the history held within materials, the cultures they carry, and the people we meet along the way—passing those values on to the next generation.

 

Old things do not lose their purpose.

 

They simply wait to become part of a new story.

 

That quiet cycle lies at the heart of everything we make.

 

We will continue to follow our own true north, one step at a time.
